Women's Book Club: Humble Roots

June 24th, 2018

$0

Looking for summer reading? Read at the pool or the beach and then join us for coffee, community, and conversation at our monthly book club. We will meet three times this summer at Waterbean Coffee in Huntersville to discuss that month's book. You have the option to purchase the book when you register or to purchase it on your own.

This month's book is Humble Roots by Hannah Anderson. Read the description from the publisher:

The Blue Ridge Parkway meanders through miles of rolling Virginia mountains. It’s a route made famous by natural beauty and the simple rhythms of rural life.

And it’s in this setting that Hannah Anderson began her exploration of what it means to pursue a life of peace and humility. Fighting back her own sense of restlessness and anxiety, she finds herself immersed in the world outside, discovering a classroom full of forsythia, milkweed, and a failed herb garden. Lessons about soil preparation, sour mulch, and grapevine blights reveal the truth about our dependence on God, finding rest, and fighting discontentment.

Humble Roots is part theology of incarnation and part stroll through the fields and forest. Anchored in the teaching of Jesus, Anderson explores how cultivating humility—not scheduling, strict boundaries, or increased productivity—leads to peace. “Come unto me, all who labor and are heavy laden,” Jesus invites us, “and you will find rest for your souls.”

So come. Learn humility from the lilies of the field and from the One who is humility Himself. Remember who you are and Who you are not, and rediscover the rest that comes from belonging to Him.

VBX 2018

June 25th - June 29th, 2018

Kids are under so much pressure - to perform well, to be the best, to balance schedules that are full to the brim, to excel in every arena. From that vantage point, life's big game can seem like no fun. But when we step back, we realize that the GOAL is not competing in your own strength. God has already given us everything we need! He's given us His complete Word as the ultimate playbook. He's given us Himself, which gives us a reason to celebrate. He wants us to join His team, train hard, celebrate our salvation, and encourage one another. So what are you waiting for? This is VBX 2018... It's GAME ON!!

Women's Book Club: Imperfect Disciple

July 21st, 2018

$0 - $12

Looking for summer reading? Read at the pool or the beach and then join us for coffee, community, and conversation at our monthly book club. We will meet three times this summer at Waterbean Coffee in Huntersville to discuss that month's book. You have the option to purchase the book when you register or to purchase it on your own.

This month's book is The Imperfect Disciple by Jared Wilson. Read the description from the publisher:

Too many discipleship books are written for clean, perfect people who know all the right Sunday school answers. The Imperfect Disciple is for the rest of us--people who screw up, people who are weary, people who are wondering if it's safe to say what they're really thinking.

For the believer who is tired of quasi-spiritual lifehacks being passed off as true, down-and-dirty discipleship, here is a discipleship book that isn't afraid to be honest about the mess we call real life. With incisive wit, warm humor, and moving stories, Jared Wilson shows readers how the gospel works in them and in their lives when

  • they can't get their act together
  • they think God is giving them the silent treatment
  • they think church would be better without all the people
  • they're not happy with the person in the mirror
  • and much more

Wilson frees readers from the self-doubt and even the misplaced self-confidence they may feel as they walk with Jesus down the often difficult road of life. The result is a faith that weathers storms, lifts burdens, and goes forth to make more imperfect disciples.

This month's book is None Like Him by Jen Wilkin. Read the book's description from the publisher:

God is self-existent, self-sufficient, eternal, immutable, omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent, sovereign, infinite, and incomprehensible.

We're not.

And that's a good thing.

Our limitations are by design. We were never meant to be God. But at the root of every sin is our rebellious desire to possess attributes that belong to God alone. Calling us to embrace our limits as a means of glorifying God's limitless power, Jen Wilkin invites us to celebrate the freedom that comes when we rest in letting God be God.
